Coronavirus has had a huge impact on small charities who unlike the large charities cant launch huge fundraising campaigns with paid advertising , don't benefit from rate relief or staff furlough because we don't have paid staff only unpaid volunteers.

No fundraising events means no funds and Cats r us has also had to close its small fundraising store as couldn't afford overheads.

Cats R Us has a strict no destroy policy and are left with a lot of very difficult to home cats either because of their health or behaviour problems and all still have to be fed and vet treated regularly, volunteers feeding them and the feral colonies we support are doing so out of their own pockets as funds are so low.

Sadly if no funds come in then Cats R Us may have to close completely which would be devastating for the local area cats.

White cat skin cancer

WARNING graphic images. Harvey the feral cat had to have his ear removed today as had cancerous tumours. Allotment feral he is now contained in a purpose built pen until fully healed. Sun damage and cancer are a big problem for white cats. Vets said we caught just in time or would have been a dead cat. Coronavirus

Coronavirus: well we are likely going to struggle for cat food in the coming weeks. I know it must seem like we are constantly raising funds but that’s because we are constantly running out of funds. Daily costs of food and litter plus the feral colonies we feed daily, vet bills, volunteers using their own money a lot of the time too. Currently we need to raise funds to neuter five from a feral colony in Gainford . Unlike members of the public we aren’t eligible for vouchers from other neuter campaigns and of course there is no local branch of national cat charity anymore. Every little helps.

Tortie Doddles aka fluffybot I’m nearly three mth old, born outside to feral mum but I let you stroke and pick me up that’s if you catch me first as I will avoid you if you let me so need owner to continue showing me cuddles are good. Its kitten season and sadly to many people still don't neuter their cats which means we are overloaded with requests to help.

Mum and Kittens were struggling to survive outdoors in the countryside.

 Mum quite wild at the moment so time will tell if she will settle down.

 They didn't much like being treated for parasites but all new arrivals first step to good health is getting rid of parasites.

Our phones, messages, emails , texts are constantly asking us to take in yet more cats. We are already stretched and struggling so please understand we can’t take every cat that needs help. Time for finders to step up and look at what they can do to help. Adult cats are easily supported out doors if you provide food and shelter and larger charities supply neuter vouchers so the breeding will stop. If a mum cat has kittens at your property again provide food and a shelter and try to handle the kittens so they get used to humans and can be rehomed, remember kittens need to stay with mum till at least eight weeks. Most importantly if you are a cat owner get your cats neutered so you don’t add to the problem. If you move house and have cats then make sure you are taking them with you. Unless you can provide a safe forever home then don’t even consider getting a kitten.

In 1998 Cats R Us faced a battle with Toys R us to keep our name, we won that battle and have helped thousands of cats since but now we face another Battle.

Summer is coming and summer sees an army of abandoned and unwanted neglected kittens needing the charity help, a registered charity we receive no government funding and rely entirely on our fundraising and kind donations from the public without a surge in donations we are going to be unable to help as many of these kittens as need us as we are running out of funds.

Cats R Us already struggles just to pay the daily costs of food and litter for cats in care, ones like long stay Huwey with Pemphigus requiring daily medication, older cats like nineteen year old Buster and Snowy the white cat with cancer as well of the stream of cats that come into care who we then prepare and find forever homes for. Feral Colonies that we feed daily 365days a year there are lots of feral colonies that need that extra support we provide in feeding as well as neutering.

Sadly our fundraising store at South West Durham Business Centre , Dabble Duck, Shildon DL4 2QN which is open Monday Tuesday Thursday and Friday simply doesnt raise enough funds for us to cover all cost involved in rescue and unless we get an increase in donations we are going to be unable to continue. Donations of cat food help enormously too, donate the cat food your cat wont eat, buy and extra tin of food when shopping a little bit really does go a long way as well as monetary donations.

What does Cats R Us do?

We are a Registered Charity Number 1158022

We take in vulnerable, sick, injured, often distressed cats and kittens, we rehabilitate Socialise get any necessary vet treatment and prepare for new homes.

Our extensive experience means we are often able to save and nurse back to health cats/kittens where the prognosis has not been good. We work closely with other rescue charities both national and local.

We do not take in unwanted pets but on some occasions if you are looking to rehome your cat we may be able to help.

We support local feral colonies by supplying food and making sure they are fed 365 days of the year.

We run a successful Trap Neuter Return scheme which ensures feral colonies cease to breed and therefore thrive better.

Cats R Us Fundraising Store is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday & Friday 10am till 12noon tucked away in one of the old Astraka/Calsonic offices at South West Durham Business Centre , Dabble Duck, Shildon DL4 2QN Donations for the cats can be dropped off as well as items for us to sell to raise funds. Felix the Feral Finder

Felix the feral finder brought another one home last night, just before bed when he came in for the night I could hear the cat howl for him, went out and fed it and will have to set trap tonight, another late night to try and get him. Felix is very territorial like all cats yet seems to have this thing about bringing young uneutered toms home!


Fist time this happened was around 4yrs ago and there has been a steady stream since even though we moved house 2yr ago this bringing home of strays continued. He certainly doesn't show the same tolerance for neighbouring cats that have a home.

Here he is thinking through his next strategy to find the lost and homeless.

Social Deprivation has a huge impact on animal welfare

Had to pick these up from a terrible situation this morning, domestic violence, squalor etc but felt so sorry for the woman as these poor cats were her only comfort she was distraught but knew son was abusing them too and council was involved because of state of house so they had to go.

No sign of Council worker who was supposed to meet us there so decided to just go in, it all went OK.

Am thankfull these cats are out of there but the human plight affect us too. Social Deprivation has a huge impact on animal welfare :-(

Feeding Ferals

Today as usual we support Ferals, let me tell you about one set of Ferals which we wouldn't really call a colony as they are a mish mash of Strays.

The old Girl Clio used to visit regularly in her youth, as there are houses nearby we knew she had a home and indeed one day spoke to her owner who told us all about Clio how old she was and everything. Now as the years have passed Clio has stayed in the warmth of the greenhouse on her favourite chair. The owner seems to have disappeared as despite us looking we couldn't trace her when Clio first showed signs of old age and needed help so we got Clio flea allergy treated and have since funded dental work for her.

There are two or three black strays who regularly turn up for food, then there is the little feral queen who a national charity spayed and helped kittens but couldn't return back to site due to it being to dangerous, she lays low but again enjoys shelter warmth and food provided.
A big Grey and white boy turned up last year looking very the worse for wear but he is a lot better now.

Today over the roof of one of the sheds sashayed a very sleek black cat wearing a posh Diamante collar, we had to smile as we debated if she had come to show it off to us all :-)

How to help Feral Cats

What does a feral need, they need food, water and shelter most of all but they also need to be spayed/neutered. If there are Feral cats where you live then you can be sure that they will multiply and what may be a small problem today will be a huge problem in a few months. What can you do? A plastic dustbin with the lid off makes an ideal dry shelter for a feral, placing warm bedding and food inside will encourage the cat to go in. If a nursing queen has kittens in one of these shelters then at five weeks old try and catch them inside the bin and take them inside to be tamed and homed. The mother cat should be trapped and spayed as soon as possible, local councils will often provide a trap free of charge and your vet may give a discount. There are also vouchers available from the Cat Protection towards the cost of spaying. To trap a feral you need to bait the trap with strong smelling food, normal cat food doesn't work it needs to be smelly like sardines or mackerel. We can all make a difference by trying to help solve the problem. Dear God please send me somebody who'll care! I'm tired of running, I'm sick with despair. My body is aching, it's so racked with pain. And Dear God I pray as I run in the rain, "That someone will love me and give me a home. A warm cozy bed I can call my own My last owner neglected me and chased me away To rummage in garbage and live as a stray. But now God I'm tired and hungry and cold. And I'm afraid that I'll never grow old. They've chased me with sticks and hit me with stones While I run in the streets just looking for bones! I'm not really bad God, please help if you can. For I have become just a "VICTIM OF MAN!" I'm wormy Dear God and I'm ridden with fleas and All that I want is an owner to please! If you find one for me God, I'll try to be good I won't run away and I'll do as I should. I don't think I'll make it to long on my own, Cause I'm getting so weak and I'm so all alone. Believe it or not I have had calls from people to help rehome strays they have been feeding for years, so I ask myself how long does it take before a Stray becomes the responsibility of the person who is feeding it? I mean they feed the stray everyday and even watch kittens arrive year after year but don't class the problem as theirs as it wasn't their cat in the beginning. They could have chose to get the stray spayed, taken it into their home, taken to a rescue. My opinion is that if you start something you should do it properly and see it to the end, quite often numerous people in an area will be feeding strays which are breeding yet if they all gave a £1 a week for a few weeks they could pay for the stray to be trapped and spayed. If people continue to turn their back or expect rescue groups to always pick up the pieces then the problems will only escalate where as if everyone pulls together and tries to make a difference we can achieve miracles.
